3 kinds of lion
Saturday afternoon exploring Sham Shui Po with talented maker Pilz Au Yeung - what a brilliant guide to this awesome place in Hong Kong! We looked at tons of tool stuff, had a snack in a very cool cafe and made friends with a young cat named Egg Yolk! Turns out he’s a massive Bruce Lee fan - we parted as friends!

Really enjoyed fitting this one together, scales are double black and natural canvas micarta, brass and stainless steel. Looking forward to making more of these ‘x ray’ designs with the inlay matching the profile of the blade

Some ‘Island’ design slip-joint knives shown at The Sharp Show last weekend. Green, natural and double-black canvas micarta inset with hand fitted brass bolsters. Blades and springs SF100 (AEB-L) stainless, 316 liners. These were really enjoyable to make and it was great to get lots of positive reactions!

Three new handmade ‘Halo’ slipjoint knives ready for the Sharp Show on 7 Oct. Blades and springs are Sheffield made SF100 stainless steel, liners are 316, scales a mix of orange, natural, white and black micarta with brass details. Better crack on and make some more!

Next steps in making a batch of slip joint (non-locking) knives, here the blades are being marked with a punch I made, using traditional hand engraving techniques. I don’t have a press and smacking the punch with a hammer is a bit too variable so I’m using a bench vice to gently push the mark into the steel. I made a jig to hold each blade in position relative to the punch, it works fine but is a bit of a frankenjig! Might have to evolve this a bit. This isn’t the only way to put a makers mark on a knife, I could electro-etch or laser mark onto the finished surface but I’ve always been drawn to the lo-tech DIY approach!

Busy day with a hacksaw cutting blades and springs from SF100, getting some slip-joint knives ready for the Sharp Show this autumn. I could have had them laser cut or wire cut but I quite fancied the challenge of doing it myself just to prove I still could!
